By bringing our music and our visible presence into the community, we hope to counter prejudice, ignorance, and intolerance and to foster openness, respect, and cooperation.

Be a Mundi

No Auditions!

The chorus is open to all interested singers each Tuesday in September. If you attend 3 out of 4 rehearsals in September--you're in, should you decide that Soromundi is for you. There are no auditions and no skill or experience requirements . . . just a desire to sing!

Soromundi is open to any woman who wants to sing with us, regardless of sexual orientation. Although we ask for a $15-25 month dues contribution (September through May), dues are on a sliding scale and no one is turned away for lack of funds. To contact us about joining Soromundi, click here.

Expectations
Chorus members do not need to have any music reading ability to sing with us. Some members do, some don't. We sing songs that are taught using sheet music and songs taught through the oral tradition. You will find out which way works best for you. There are chorus members happy to help you learn either way. We do ask, however, that if you do use sheet music to help you learn a song, that you try to learn it as soon as possible so your attention can stay on the directors rather than your paper.

Rehearsals are two hours long, once a week. Day-long Rehearsal Retreats are held one to two times per year.

Soromundi is a “performance choir.” What does that mean? It means that besides all the fun stuff that goes on, we acknowledge that our music is a high priority. In that vein, we expect you to make a commitment to attend rehearsals and rehearsal retreats regularly. It’s hard on the Directors and on the other members of the choir if you miss too many rehearsals.

That’s not to say that the rest of your life will never intrude into rehearsal time. Intermittent illness and emergencies are to be expected. When you do miss a rehearsal, please do what it takes to catch up before the next rehearsal. There are plenty of resources to help you including your Section Leader and the Members Only section of this web site.

Soromundi is more than a chorus...we're a community. Our rehearsal space is open a half hour before rehearsal starts and often members get together after rehearsal for a bite to eat. However, rehearsal time itself is extremely valuable. We get better and learn when we're focused. Socializing during rehearsal is distracting to other choir members. It is particularly challenging for our visually-impaired members to hear the directors when there are too many other things going on.

Out of respect for some of our members who have sensitivity to scents, please do not use scented lotions, perfumes, or shampoos of any sort prior to rehearsal or performances. Even strongly scented soaps or laundry products can cause distress for someone. Smoking and drinking alcohol prior to a rehearsal or a performance are discouraged.

How We Choose Our Music

At song selection retreat in the early summer, members bring songs to propose for next season's repertoire. All chorus members are welcome and we spend the weekend at the beach listening to music and making a plan for the next year.

We bring recordings when possible, sheet music if available, and sometimes perform a song in a small group if that's the best way to convey it. We listen to all of the songs, hear from the directors about the feasibility of arranging and singing each one, talk about balance of style and difficulty, and come to a group agreement on a list of songs.

The directors then pick from this list, so we usually sing fewer songs than were picked. Each director also adds a few songs to the repertoire at her discretion.
