Join Soromundi
NOTE: The chorus is now closed to prospective members for 2011-2012.
No
Auditions!
We open our rehearsals to prospective members each September. There are no auditions and no skill or experience requirements…just a desire to sing.
In 2011 these open rehearsals were on September 13, 20, and 27. All Soromundi members must attend at least two of these three open rehearsals to be part of the choir. If emergency prevents you from attending a September rehearsal for some reason, please contact the Membership Chair mundimembership@gmail.com in order to discuss your situation.
Soromundi is open to any woman who wants to sing with us, regardless of sexual orientation. Although we ask for a $15-40 month dues contribution (September through May), dues are on a sliding scale and no one is turned away for lack of funds. Expectations
Chorus members do not need to have any music reading ability to sing with us. Some members do, some don't. We sing songs that are taught using sheet music and songs taught through the oral tradition. You will find out which way works best for you. There are chorus members happy to help you learn either way. We do ask, however, that if you do use sheet music to help you learn a song, that you try to learn it as soon as possible so your attention can stay on the directors rather than your paper.
Rehearsals are two hours long, once a week. Day-long Rehearsal Retreats are held one to two times per year.
Soromundi is a performance choir. What does that mean? It means that besides all the fun stuff that goes on, we acknowledge that our music is a high priority. In that vein, we expect you to make a commitment to attend rehearsals and rehearsal retreats regularly. It's hard on the directors and on the other members of the choir if you miss too many rehearsals.
That's not to say that the rest of your life will never intrude into rehearsal time. Intermittent illness and emergencies are to be expected. When you do miss a rehearsal, please do what it takes to catch up before the next rehearsal. There are plenty of resources to help you including your Section Leader and the Members Only section of this web site.
Soromundi is more than a chorus...we're a community. Our rehearsal space is open a half hour before rehearsal starts and often members get together after rehearsal for a bite to eat. However, rehearsal time itself is extremely valuable. We get better and learn when we're focused. Socializing during rehearsal is distracting to other choir members. It is particularly challenging for our visually-impaired members to hear the directors when there are too many other things going on.
Out of respect for some of our members who have sensitivity to scents, please do not use scented lotions, perfumes, or shampoos of any sort prior to rehearsal or performances. Even strongly scented soaps or laundry products can cause distress for someone. Smoking and drinking alcohol prior to a rehearsal or a performance are discouraged.
